Prince Charming

Since I'm still pretty new to this whole blogging thing I thought I would share one of my favourite recent memories: my ball.

I grew up pretty tom-boyish and hated dresses, makeup and the whole 'girly' scene. I never wanted to play with dolls, hated the colour pink and my mum stopped choosing my clothes as soon as I could dress myself. I didn't wear a dress for a good 10 years but that all changed when I reached college and all the girls started wearing makeup to school and crop tops and skimpy dresses to social events. It's fair to say I was influenced strongly by my peers despite my determination to remain an individual and to not conform.

I have never been one for dating (having never gone on one in my life) and it took me years longer then the rest of the girls to even care whats boys thought of me. I remember so clearly my first real college crush. I liked him for years but being the gutless person I am, I never told him how I felt. After getting over him I didn't have much to do with boys until I met someone else. Now this isn't the typical guy you would expect me to have a crush on but he has the most amazing sense of humour and is into almost the exact same things as me. He's not perfect, I know that, but I cannot help but be amazed by the kind and caring person that he is.

Now he and I have been friends for a few years but only this year have we started talking every day. Now I had heard through the grape vine at school that he wasn't going to take anyone to the ball, and being the nosy parker that I am, I decided that I wanted to know if this was true or not. Turns out he was planning to ask someone but he kept telling me 'secret' whenever I asked him who it was. Now he had let slip that they had two specific classes together and when I started going through the list in my head I realised that the only girl who shared both these classes with him was me. I was beyond excited when he finally asked me to be his ball date and was extremely nervous.

I had always considered myself below average on the beautiful scale, seeing as I don't wear a size 8, am not very good looking and don't have the social skills that many of those around me do. But through one amazing night, where I felt like a princess and actually felt wanted, my self-confidence was boosted. The year before (year 12 ball) I wasn't asked by anyone and was very disappointed but felt I couldn't let anyone know because I was to prideful to admit that I wanted to be liked and I saw being 'girly' and having these feelings as a sign of weakness in myself. That whole night was a constant reminder that I wasn't as well liked as my friends (who all got ball dates). The only other single guy at the same table as me, made me feel like he would rather go by himself then with me. I felt like a buzkill the whole night and ended up spending most of it sitting down talking rather than dancing or taking pictures. I was so self conscious that night that the only photo I took was a class photo.

Now the ball is a really big deal for me because I still detest dresses and makeup and general 'girly' things. So to dress up and to actually be excited about the night was a miracle in itself. The night went perfectly. We were seated next to each other (he had prearranged it with the seating planners), we had photo's taken, we made fun of each other and he was even gracious enough to go to the pre ball that my friends were going to so that I wouldn't feel awkward, instead of insisting that I attend his friends one. I was on a high when he asked me to dance with him and we laughed our way around the dance floor as we stood on each others feet and were just generally clumsy. All round it was an amazing night where I truly felt special and prince charming treated me like the princess I didn't think I was.

He will never know how much that night meant to me and the confidence in myself just by being the gentlemen that he is, he was able to give me. Maybe one day I will tell him where to find this blog and he can read all about it, but for now I am happy as is.

Until next time
